Debate in Basinger's

The debate in class today was about whether or not Barak Obama's "race" has anything to do with why he was elected president and if it effects the minority of black students getting excepted into colleges.  If my previous sentence makes any sense, because I'm just trying to sound smart, I will express my opinion on the situation.
I believe that it should not matter the race of the person, but rather their intelligence that gets them excepted into colleges.  We as man, do not choose are race, or our gender, or even when we get to be born that determines our age, but we do have control over our education and how hard we try to gain knowledge.  So why should some be more fortunate than others in getting excepted into college over something that they did not work for and were just born with? It seems quite unfair to me that race is even an issue.
But apparently because now we have a "black" president, that he now represents the whole african american race and that the system should be changed giving black students more opportunities for an education. I also don't find that fair. I mean, why should they suddenly get special treatment because our president is now black? Why can't all students, no matter what race, have an equal chance to be able to get in to college by how hard they study despite the color of their skin.
My final statement is that, i believe that all opportunities for education should be equal among all that are willing to learn whether they be black or white.
